60 earth hour

…as the last person leaves?

Earth Hour is an environmental initiative which invites Sydney businesses and residents to plunge the city into darkness for one hour on the evening of March 31, 2007.

Earth Hour is about changing environmental attitudes and behaviours to cut Sydney’s carbon dioxide pollution by five percent in 2007. WWF’s plan is long-term, the aim being to make Earth Hour an annual global event with Sydney as the starting point.

And what a success it was

EnergyAustralia retail general manager Tim O’Grady said that, before Earth Hour, its experts said an energy saving of about 5 per cent in Sydney’s CBD was likely.

“I’m delighted to report that initial readings after the event indicate the final figure is actually close to 10 per cent, which really is quite staggering when you think about it.”

Let’s just hope that others take hold of this great initiative and make the most of it.
